Hawaii nach Herten. Eine keine Geschichte von Opa's Traum, Wasser und Sand...

Military Honors

Captain Jürgen Looft, a German Navy officer, visited Oahu Cemetery on June 6 to pay respects and lay flowers at the graves of two German sailors who are buried in plots owned by the German Benevolent Society of Honolulu.

Captain Looft, a naval attaché and assistant defense attaché stationed with the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., and his wife, Dagmar, visited the graves of Rudoph Scholz and Hermann Walter, both sailors with the Imperial German Navy in the early 1900s.

They left floral offerings wrapped with ribbons in the colors of the German flag. Scholz, the head torpedo machinist on the on the S.M.S. Arcona, died in Honolulu in April 1910 while his ship was in port for repairs. Walter, of Charlottenburg, who died in October 1914, was a deck officer on the S.M.S. Geier, a German battleship. The ship had just arrived in Honolulu and was undergoing repairs when Walter died. After the outbreak of World War I, the S.M.S. Geier was impounded and converted into a U.S.Navy ship.

Also in attendance at the event were Skippy Sweet, Keiko Hassler, and John Hassler of the German Benevolent Society of Honolulu, and Katrin Koel-Abt, representing the German Club Hawaii and the local German community. The meeting was arranged by Denis Salle, honorary German consul in Honolulu.

The visit is believed to be the first official recognition of Scholz and Walter since their deaths over 100 years ago. We are grateful to the Loofts and to the German government for the honor they have paid to these German sailors of the previous century.

Morgenstern Piano Trio

posted Sep 26, 2014, 3:28 PM by German Club Hawaii   [ updated Oct 10, 2014, 1:07 PM ]
Additional Information added....
Sensational German Morgenstern Piano Trio coming to Hawaii on Sunday, October 26th, 2014, 7:30 pm
The Honolulu Chamber Music Series is proud to finally bring the German Morgenstern Piano Trio to Honolulu to perform on Sunday, October 26th, at the Doris Duke Theatre (Honolulu Museum of Art).
Following is an excerpt of what a critic for the Muenchner Merkur had to say about them:
"The listener heard everything desirable in a chamber music concert: Rhythm, precision, balance in sound,
and perfect intonation.  Above all an organic unity in preparation.  After the last note faded away, the hall was suffocating by silence, as if the audience had to solve a spell before breaking into an orgy of applause".
The trio has won numerous prizes at competition, including first prize at the international Joseph Haydn Competition in Vienna, second prize at the Fifth Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, and second prize and the audience prize at the prestigious ARD competition in Munich.
In 2009, the trio was awarded the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award, the highest distinction for a piano trio, and one the included an appearance in Carnegie Hall and more than 20 concerts in the U.S.
For further information, including ticket purchase, please visit our website

In celebration of  this year's 60th anniversary,  the Honolulu Chamber Music Series has decided to offer a special deal to certain organizations with discounts to those who commit to buy a bloc of tickets.  We thought it would be very appropriate to start with the German Club given that our first concert on October 26th features the Morgenstern Trio from Germany.
We are extending the following offer to the German Club:
Buy a "bloc" of a minimum of 10 tickets and pay $ 38 per ticket instead of the regular $ 48 per ticket.
Since this is a significant discount of more than 20 % and since our organization has no staff to handle this, it would require that a member of your club coordinates the purchase, i.e. contacts the interested members and collects the money prior to the concert.  Some of our board members, including myself, will be  at  the Doris Duke Foyer 1.5 hours prior to the concert at which point we could exchange the tickets for the money collected and your representative could then hand out the tickets to  your members as they arrive.

Please inform the German Club if you are willing to be the point person in coordinating the ticket orders to have the discounted price.

Honolulu, Hawai‘i, November 4, 2013 – IL Gelato Hawai‘i has announced the Grand Opening celebration for its gelateria at Kahala Mall:

Monday, November 11, 2013 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

“After delays due to trainings on the mainland for the Gelato World Championships that were scheduled over the summer, we had to push back the Grand Opening celebration for the Kahala Mall gelateria.” said Dirk Koeppenkastrop, founder and owner of IL Gelato Hawai‘i. “We are honored that the Grand Opening celebration will be presided over by Māhealani Wong, Kahuna Kakalaleo of Nā Wa‘a Lalani o Pu‘u Koholā. After the blessing, we will be giving away free samples of our Italian grilled sandwiches, gelato, drinks and more!”

The IL Gelato Hawai‘i gelateria at Kahala Mall offers more than just scoops of their famous and authentic gelato and sorbetto. It is a full-scale Italian-style gelato bar serving “coppas” (beautiful Italian-style sundaes), 5 varieties of paninis (grilled Italian sandwiches - with or without meat), specialty treats like Spaghetti Ice (gelato made to look like spaghetti with sauce!), various drink specialties, and other food items.

The Kahala Mall gelateria is located adjacent to the main stage area near the Wai‘alae Street entrance and has become a popular community gathering place and hangout.

Last year, IL Gelato Hawai‘i received the Governor’s Green Business Award. This year, IL Gelato Hawai‘i received the “Best of Honolulu Award” in the Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt category.

About IL Gelato Hawai‘i
IL Gelato Hawai‘i is an authentic Italian style gelateria on O‘ahu that makes gourmet gelato (ice cream) and non-fat sorbetto (sorbet) fresh daily. IL Gelato Hawai‘i focuses on all-natural Hawaiian, Asian, and Italian flavors and offers wholesale and catering services to hotels, restaurants, gelato bars, and smoothie/coffee shops. A full-menu gelateria in the Kahala Mall rounds out its service portfolio.

Grand opening will be mid to end of September. Stay tuned for the announcement.

Come experience our authentic Italian-style Gelateria – right in Kahala Mall!
Sit around the gelato “bar” with friends and watch the parade of people while our  friendly staff serve you delicious and creamy artisan gelato (low in fat, high in flavor),  non-fat sorbetto (sorbet), panini (grilled sandwiches), coppa igh km(sundaes), Belgian  and Italian/specialty drinks including affogato (your choice of gelato with a double-    shot of espresso). Yum!
We feature house-made sauces and waffle cones for our gelato and sorbetto which are made fresh daily with real local fruit and authentic Italian ingredients. Specialty paninis are made right here with pesto, goat cheese, olive tapenade, roasted bell peppers, arugula, chicken, prosciutto, fig spread, and other tasty ingredients. Nothing artificial, here!

Wahlrecht für Deutsche im Ausland

posted May 21, 2013, 4:32 AM by German Club Hawaii   [ updated May 21, 2013, 4:40 AM ]

April 2013, BGBl. I S. 962).
